PGSS Letter Writing Campaign

Dear PGSS Alumni, Parents, and Supporters,

Last month, I met with Senator Jake Corman, the head of the Senate Appropriations Committee who said that the state funding we are asking for is completely reasonable -- there is no reason $200,000 could not be included in the budget. He said that for this to happen, though, he must hear from other state senators that this is a priority. Therefore, I took a personal day from work to spend a day at the Capitol in Harrisburg to meet with as many legislators as I could. Everyone I met with from the House and the Senate, Republicans and Democrats, was supportive. How many other causes are supported by both sides of the aisle?

It is imperative that we send letters to our state legislators letting them know how important PGSS was and why it needs to be re-started for future students.  We must make them understand that we are not asking them to fund the whole program as before; we want to have a public-private partnership between the PGSS Campaign and the State of Pennsylvania. As you know, we are also applying for grants and are fundraising with alumni, TA's, faculty, parents and friends.  We have raised over $130,000, and we just received $10,000 more from a company in California that heard about our interest in the sciences!

If you live in PA, the link to locate your reps is at:
Please send one letter to your senator and another letter to your representatives (links to samples below).

If you do not live in PA, please write to Senator Corman and Representative Adolph anyway.  Then ask parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, friends -- anyone living in PA -- to write to their reps about this. Time is of the essence; this must be done by the first week in June at the latest. Please remember to forward this to your parents.

Sample letters you can send to your state senator and representative are available below. Remember to use all titles and company names; they do seem to make a difference. If possible, please send a snail mail letter, as they carry more weight than an email. If you have time only for an e-mail. that’s fine, as EVERY LETTER MATTERS. Please let us know when you send a letter, so that we can keep track of how many have been sent.

I am also attaching the information sheets we use when meeting with legislators. If you can meet with your legislators, please give them that information. A meeting carries exceptional weight with legislators.

Thank you for all your support in helping to make PGSS 2013 and beyond a reality.
