A Letter From Our President

Dear PGSS Alumni:

I am pleased to announce that the PGSS Alumni Association, Inc., has received 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status from the IRS. This means that, in our effort to restore PGSS after its 2009 demise, we can now take tax-deductible  contributions!

As the lawyers like us to say, your contribution is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. As a professional economist, I might be tempted to get into obscure tax-code details like the Alternative Minimum Tax - but rather than bore you, let me point out that an accountant is the best person for you to ask questions about your own tax situation.  :-)

I want to sincerely thank the Association Directors and Officers who have devoted countless volunteer hours to bring us to this point.

Please visit the Association website, where you can make a secure donation via PayPal:

If you prefer to write a check, you can send contributions to:

Our ultimate goal is to raise $500,000 per year. Raising this amount will allow the program to be re-established, tuition free, for summer 2012.

We can fund the school on our own if every alumnus contributes $200 each year. Since this amount may be high for some of our younger alumni, and since we are still working on getting back in touch with our older alumni, I am asking everyone to consider donating 1% of their annual income. If 25% of our alumni each contribute 1% of their annual income, we will reach our goal. As a sign of my commitment to this work, I am personally contributing $10,000 per year in 2010 and 2011 to get us started (and yes, this is much more than 1% of my income!).

While I am encouraging everyone to dig deep, I also want you to know that any gift amount is important and appreciated: $10, $25, $100, $1000, whatever you can contribute. We want to be able to approach the state with evidence of support from many alumni, in hopes of setting up a partnership to keep this invaluable program alive. Your
contributions will make it easier for us to approach other funding sources: federal agencies, corporations, foundations, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania itself.

Please forward this appeal to parents and friends who may be interested. We can use all the help we can get. Younger alumni in particular, I'm hoping some of your parents will be interested in contributing. Also, if you work for an employer with a matching gifts program, please make sure to register your gift to qualify for their match.

Our goal is to make it possible for future students to receive the same tuition-free benefits we have all enjoyed. Let's repay the investment that Pennsylvania made in all of us, and provide great educational opportunities for future students.

We need your help to make the restoration of PGSS a reality! Please make your year-end tax-exempt contribution today!

With warm wishes for a great 2011,

David Reiley '86
